Biden: It’s time to sanction MOGE

This week, we are mourning the four democracy activists – Kyaw Min Yu (Ko Jimmy), Phyo Zeyaw Thaw, Hla Myo Aung, and Aung Thura Zaw – killed by the Myanmar military. In the wake of these murders, the U.S. Administration is signaling that “all options are on the table” to hold the military accountable.

Let’s make sure that the Biden Administration chooses to help cut off the military’s source of petro dollars by imposing sanctions on Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE).

These are the first executions of democracy activists since 1988. In a closed-doors trial, the Myanmar military had sentenced to death in January Kyaw Min Yu, better known as Ko Jimmy, and former lawmaker and hip-hop artist Phyo Zeya Thaw.

President Biden must respond to this new atrocity by cutting off the military junta’s source of oil dollars. Myanmar earns close to US$1 billion a year from natural gas sales. Much of this money flows to the junta through Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE).

The European Union has already sanctioned MOGE. This week, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair, Senator Bob Menendez (D, New Jersey) and Minority Leader, Senator Mitch McConnell (R, Kentucky), have called on President Biden to impose sanctions on MOGE.
